Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Man Man’s Six Demon Bag plays like one of those mystery concoctions you made during lunch as a kid. You know the one where you mixed a lot of food that shouldn’t go together. Ketchup, mustard, milk, maybe some bread, whatever else was available. Then you probably dared your friend to eat it for $5 or something. Well imagine your creation was actually incredible. Consider that all of those conflicting components rendered something far greater than practical knowledge would allow you, or your friend, to assume. You’ve created the next big thing. Alabama adopts it as its state food. Everyone loves you. That girl you’ve been eyeing since first grade finally talks to you. Things are looking up.
Seems unlikely, eh? Well likeliness has nothing to do with Six Demon Bag. Musical typicality is not its concern. And that is one of its primary draws.
A problem that often plagues fringe music is that their digressions into unfortunate tangles of yelps and screeches produce few, if any, discernable payoffs (see: The Fiery Furnaces’ Rehearsing My Choir). Not surprisingly, the major flaws of the album come from a few failed experiments. “Young Einstein on the Beach,” for instance, is so random that it seems out of place and only succeeds in derailing the album. I’m pleased to say they manage to regain their momentum relatively quickly, but elements like this present flaws in its fluidity and digestibility.
Six Demon Bag acknowledges the forms of its origin, but in the end renounces their established structures in lieu of something more breathable. It manages to experiment with its genres and abandon many of their conventions while maintaining something coherent enough to be enjoyable. The result is a highly listenable postmodern rock tinged Klezmer odyssey.
The album plays like an alcohol induced dream—the perfect soundtrack for those late nights comprised of morning regrets. Beware of tracks like “Engwish Bwudd” and “Spider Cider” as they’re so exceedingly catchy that you’ll certainly upset your goal to finish the album. It took me several tries to get past them and through the rest of the disc. And the other pieces on the album definitely worth getting through.
What it sounds like: Mr. Bungle, Tom Waits, and Frank Zappa at a Jewish wedding.
Why we like it: It’s an expertly executed anthem for the debased; songs of debauchery that make you want to get sloshed and cause trouble.
