Reforging the Metal on VH1
Variety is reporting that the folks behind VH1’s Breaking Bonaduce have signed on to produce a show aimed returning the metal to the Las Vegas strip. The new series, Supergroup, began production of seven episodes this week and will premiere May 18th at 10pm.
Although not quite in the same league as supergroups such as Cream and Derek and the Dominoes, the show does boast an intriguing line-up of rockers. Ted Nugent (is he doing anything except making reality shows these days?), Sebastian Bach, Evan Seinfeld, and Jason Bonham.
The musicians will be put through a metal bootcamp led by dimunitive manager Doc McGhee in preparation for a show at Vegas hotspot Rain. McGhee, well-decorated rock and roll general, is Motley Crue’s manager and used to oversee bands like Bon Jovi back in the heyday of hair metal. He also earned the distinction of being arrested for helping smuggle forty-thousand of pounds of marijuana into the country. As part of his community service, McGhee organized the incredibly rocking Moscow Music and Peace Festival. Tommy Lee called the event “a monumental festival of hypocrisy” but it still was an impressive gathering of metal gods.
All of which is to say that McGhee is well qualified to be the little general to this group of comeback rockers. This show could be good, or it could be really, really bad. I’ll watch the trainwreck for a little while, just to see what happens. One disappointing aspect of this show is that the band has not agreed to stay together beyond the two week period of shooting the series. I’m not naive about when they put these things together, but still, couldn’t they at least pretend this is a serious attempt at putting together a kick ass band?
