Shoplifting - Body Stories
I’ve got a treat for you all this afternoon, something new. A band you’ve probably never heard of. But one you’ll likely be hearing a lot about in the near future. Shoplifting is the newest acts to drop an album on the Kill Rock Stars label. Body Stories is a fusion of styles that makes the task of defining the release a virtually impossible task. To call it simply “rock” or “experimental” or “punk” would be to kill the energy that it exudes. To label it at all, I think, would be to miss the point entirely.
Body Stories is a menacing thing. If you’re not careful in the beginning, it’ll simply crack your skull and leave you bleeding on the pavement. But if you’re ready for it, it’s a refreshingly edgy album. Its appeal is that it offers a sound wholly different from any recent release.
On this first LP from the group, we hear a band with incredibly kinetic potential. The album starts strong and does not let up through the first four tracks. On the instrumental track five, the band bears whole the intellect that lies concealed within its preceding songs. It’s here the album lulls the listener into the brooding and contemplative state-of-mind they’ll need for the remaining tracks–it’s a momentary stay against confusion that allows the listener to catch some breath.
That said, the second half of the album is without a doubt the strongest. It’s what convinces me that the appeal of the album’s earlier tracks is no fluke. The hooks and jabs are pulled so deliberately, that it’s impossible for one to question their musical execution. Tracks like “Illegalists,” “What about a word?” and “Untrust/Trust,” will make you want to thrash about ecstatically.
For all its success, however, there are flaws. “Male Gynecology,” what is apparently the first single, is so lyrically bankrupt that the creative riffs aren’t enough to save it from failure. It tells the tale of taking control of one’s life through a sex change, but it’s so tongue in cheek that it fails to accomplish any real resonance. But for a freshman release, mistakes like this are to be expected and excused—especially when the rest of the album is most excellent.

Nice review, but I don’t agree with your take on “Male Gynecology”. I think that song is about discovering a different gender and it seems very personal. I wonder how you came to the conclusion that the lyrics were bankrupt since you didn’t provide any examples. That is bankrupt: arguing a point without backing it up. Sincerely, Irene
