The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones

Perhaps I have a fetish, but there’s something strangely sexy about a punk girl yipping and barking into a microphone. Judging by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs surging popularity, I’m not alone. Karen O and her cohorts have returned with their second full-length album, Show Your Bones. The album offers a more refined and melodic approach than their previous album Fever to Tell. This may alienate the punk purists among their fanbase, but it will surely lead to wider mainstream appeal. Pick your poison.
A largely noticeable change is the maturation of Karen O’s vocals. Karen holds back the gratuitous amounts of yelps, squeals and moans this time around in a more “quality over quantity” approach. Nick Zinner still comes up with unique guitar lines that cleverly meld retro-rock with punk and pop. Musically he still drives the bands unique and catchy sound, although he drives a bit slower this time around.
The major improvement musically here is the development of the songs. Each song feels like it has a purpose and is going somewhere, unlike some of Fever to Tell’s seemingly random collection of noise. Fever to Tell felt like an EP with brainstorm fillers to make a record long enough to be considered an LP. The band has a wonderfully fresh sonic combination that does work, but was simply held back from inconsistent songwriting. Show Your Bones does a lot to remedy this issue. Songs like the first single “Gold Lion,” and “Phenomena” demonstrate their pop elements. The band has shown willingness to explore more dynamics with songs like “Cheated Hearts” and “Way Out.” Nevertheless, the album does suffer from some of the inconsistency that plagued the first effort. Songs such as “Mysteries” and “Warrior” are rambling and forgettable.
Overall, I like the direction the band is taking. Sonically they were always unique, but their compositions needed to mature. Show Your Bones is definitely a positive progression in that regard. Some will complain about the softening of the sound, but I’ll take less edge for better songwriting any day. The band recently added second guitarist Imaad Wasif. It will be interesting to see how the former member of alaska! and Folk Implosion will affect the band’s future sounds.
