Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse
Progressive metal is one of those genres with no in between—when it’s good it’s amazing; but when it’s bad, plug your ears. As the album cover implies, Evergrey, a popular Swedish prog metal band, in their sixth album fail to avoid cheesiness and over-indulgence.
Most of Monday Morning Apocalypsefollows a pretty predictable format: crunching 7-string riffs with moderate double bass, piano-driven verses and/or interludes, and a dark power metal-ish vibe that permeates each song melodically. Most of the riffs are lacking and are pretty run-of-the-mill by today’s metal standards. The dynamics of the songs are repetitive in that they follow the over-done hard/soft/hard format with a failed intention to spark serious emotional charges.
The singing feels like a bad musical. Stereotypical of any musician in the genre, Tom Englund has a strong technical ability but employs it with little taste. His delivery feels overdone. The lyrics don’t help his cheesiness case either. Lines such as the chorus on “The Dark I Walk you Through” enter a new realm of unintentional comedy. Just plain bad.
This is not to say there aren’t perks on the album. Henrik Danhage’s guitar solos are often well done. And the album’s final track “Closure” manages to be tastefully minimalist, relative to the rest of the album at least. Other songs such as the opening title-track have their moments too, but the majority of the listening experience is forgettable and, at times, slightly embarrassing.
All in all, Monday Morning Apocalypse feels like another rehashed album in a genre infamous for poorly mimicking 90s Dream Theater. Evergrey does nothing to dispel this stereotype. It will only be listenable to the most severe prog metal purist.
