So we’ll give it a listen and come away confused, mildly frustrated, but glad that Mike Skinner aka the Streets came out with another clever album. This is not Original Pirate Material, nor is it meant to be. It isn’t A Grand Don’t Come for Free. It’s the crying in the wilderness of a kid who made good and now is unmoored, and very cheeky, and just wants a nice pair of shoes.

That is not to say that this is a bad album. Every album Skinner releases is completely different - from the rough and tumble Original Pirate Material to the long-form Chekov of A Grand Don’t Come for Free to the “message music” ensconced on this this new one - and it seems that each album talks to the last. Original Pirate Material was a kid at a rave, glow-sticks fading. A Grand was that kid hanging out a few years later basically telling his old self to grow up. This new album is a new Mike giving advice to both of those other kids. In “War of the Sexes,” he tells them about picking up lambs. In “Can’t Con An Honest John” he explains how to make a bit of money to replace the 1000 quid that fell behind the television. In “Two Nations” he addresses his American fans in a way that he might not have been able to - he was drunk and angry then - a few years earlier.

That’s right: Mike stopped drinking on this one and he’s living the high life. He and his buddies are dating famous women, visiting Las Vegas, and hanging out at the W Hotel. A far cry from the Carlsberg-fueled nights at some rat-assed club.

But this is not a more money more problems album. This is still fun. He’s still raising hell, just on a different pay scale. Oh, and his Dad died. Listen to “Never Went To Church.” Poor bastard was laid low and, like the Beatles mourning John’s mother, he uses the mournful chords of “Let It Be” to keep things on the level. It’s easily the best song on there… simple, quick, and one of the most heartfelt things on the album.

So how can we wrap up, England? Is this another trick to con us into buying a comedy album buy guys in tights? No, it isn’t, thankfully. It’s a mature album by a mature songwriter, more Badly Drawn Boy than Fiddy, but who cares. He’s still a good bloke. That’s a word you use, right? Bloke?

    Bless, this review is terrible. Grammar is poor, you nothing about english music or the history of The Streets. He finds the £1000 so it doesn’t need replacing.

    The album is a real grower but not as good as past releases. The UK music scene is far better developed and more interesting than the USA. From indie (see Bloc Party) to funk vibes (see Hey Edison), the island over the pond has a lot to offer. We are not just The Streets and Coldplay.

    Yes we use the word bloke, but we don’t say that as much as we say, ‘what’s America gone and screwed up now?’.
