Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway

In the bleak corners of metal, there is an obscure sub-genre known as “doom metal.” I prefer to think of it as “ambient metal,” as ridiculous as it sounds. Imagine Pink Floyd with distortion doing a heavy metal Sigur Ros cover; that’s doom metal. I find this burgeoning sub-genre to be one of the most interesting and enriching movements going on in metal right now—a hidden gem in the mountain of awful metal bands currently producing bad music. Which brings us to Cult of Luna and their third album, Somewhere Along the Highway.

It expands their sound and showcases the band’s staple dynamics. Although not as heavy as Pelican, or as hypnotic as Isis, the band progressively adds new layers to their depth. The simple oscillating electronic lead in “Dim,” for example, cunningly spices up the dreary atmospherics. “March of the Heartbeats,” the opener, utilizes talk boxes and feedback to create a musical drawl reminiscent of classic Air with a touch of evil. Even when these sonic experimentations fail, they distinguish Cult of Luna from the genres status quo.

Their subtle adventurousness is, without a doubt, good thing. It shows dynamism, willingness and a sensibility of its roots that push this young sub-genre into new territory. Although not a frontrunner or revolutionary of this style of music, Somewhere Along the Highway is a worthy contribution and an enjoyable listen—mood music for the demented.
