Juana Molina - Son
I have a problem with foreign language albums. For the most part I love listening to them, but I have trouble coming up with criticisms or praise for them. The problem, I believe, lies in the fact that I have no goddamn clue what the vocalist is saying. It usually boils down to “Hey, this language sounds cool” (French, Portuguese, Italian) or “I want to stab myself in the taint.” (German, Scandinavian languages).
Call me superficial, but I’m a sucker for the romance languages. It’s why Seu Jorge’s album of Bowie covers is in heavy rotation and I can listen to Madeline Peyroux’s “Jai Deux Amours” again and again. Juana Molina’s newest effort “Son” is no different. I have no idea what she’s singing about or what she’s saying, but I know I like it.
Almost every song is built on a very simple repeated acoustic riff. Upon that, ambient effects are placed sparingly along with Molina’s soft vocals. None of the songs build up to a crescendo of epic proportions. They never resolve themselves but they don’t seem to wander aimlessly (even though a few of them break the six minute mark).
Maybe I’d be inclined to be more critical of the album is I could critique the lyrics or verse structure. But, you know, it’s all just vocal noise to me–but it’s a pleasant noise. Let’s be honest here: if you’re listening to something that you don’t understand and it’s unpleasant to your ears, you’re going to turn that crap off pretty quick. But if the language is foreign and the words still sound nice, it’s not so big of a deal. Whatever she’s saying, I completely agree.

I’m impressed that you found a Juana Molina album! I really like her also, in addition to a lot of other music in Spanish, and I’m not a native Spanish speaker. I recommend that you listen to Manu Chao’s new CD, “La Radiolina.” He sings in I think 7 languages, including English, so you’ll both be able to understand enough to get the gist but also have exposure to other languages….I think you should give it a try!
